Our Story

Whidbey Island Grown Cooperative is dedicated to fostering a robust and resilient local economy that stands strong through good times and bad.

We understand that true resilience begins with a vibrant agricultural sector and a thriving local food system, but it extends to every corner of our island community.

That's why we've embraced the cooperative model—because together, we can achieve goals that surpass the reach of any single entity.

And the best part? Our collective efforts mean more delicious, locally sourced food available right here in our community!

  • We are an aggregator

We are an aggregator of food system stakeholders, farmers & food producers, and resources & connections.

  • We are member-owned

Our marketing, storage, and food distribution programs are governed by the very people who benefit from them, ensuring that decision-making remains firmly rooted in the local community.

  • We are collaborative

We work in partnership with non-profits, government officials, small businesses, economic development entities, and regional planning and networking groups to strengthen our community’s resources and opportunities.

Our Goals:

Build a healthier Island community with increased access to fresh, local food

Expand economic opportunities for local producers and enhance infrastructure for small-scale food production

Remove obstacles to buying local for shoppers, making it easier than ever to support our producers

Foster relationships among food system stakeholders, including producers, small businesses, community members, support organizations, and government entities

Together, we form a multi-stakeholder cooperative comprised of farmers, producers, businesses, and community members. We welcome all Whidbey Islanders to join us in this endeavor, as we believe in the power of inclusivity and collaboration to drive meaningful change.

  • In 2020, we launched the Food Hub—an online marketplace where customers can browse and purchase products from over 90 local and regional producers. The Food Hub offers a diverse array of goods, including vegetables, flowers, meat and seafood, dairy, baked goods, pantry staples, prepared food, bath and body products, and more, all source-identified so customers know the farms and producers they are supporting.

Ordering through the Food Hub is simple and convenient, allowing customers to pre-order online and pick up their purchases at 4 locations across the island. The Food Hub connects producers and customers even if the two can’t meet face to face, which increases sales for producers and local food access for customers.

  • Whidbey Island Grown began as a grassroots marketing initiative in 2009, driven by local farmers seeking to promote the value of buying local. Over the years, we've evolved into a dynamic brand that continues to champion the importance of supporting local agriculture. From our iconic logo to our robust marketing channels, we're committed to spreading the message of Eat Local far and wide.

Our touchstone event is Eat Local Month, a celebration of food, farming, and community in Island County during our biggest harvest month of September. It’s an opportunity to connect with the many aspects of our local food system, from farmers and food producers to chefs and food artists, local businesses, and each other.
